Amended and Extended Tribute to the Eagles

Herewith an amended and extended Brexit tribute to replace my first offering

On a dark Belgian highway, Brexit on my mind

Sad thoughts of Directives, I might never sign.

Up ahead in the distance, a trade deal came into sight

My head grew heavy and my eyes grew dim

I had to stop for the night.

There they stood in the doorway

Michel ringing the bell

And I was thinking to myself

“This once was Heaven but for now it’s Hell”

But he lit up a candle and he showed me the way

There were voices down the corridor

I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the European Union

Such a lovely space (Such a lovely space)

A Single Market place.

Plenty of stalls in the European Union,

Any time of year (Any time of year)

You can find us here.

My mind went back to Chequers

I got the Cabinet blues,

I got lots of angry girls and boys,

All with their very own views.

They shout across the table, working up a great sweat.

Some shout to remember, some shout to forget.

So I called up young Ollie

“Please write us a deal”

He says “They’ll never agree, PM

Let’s get real”

That’s why I tell him “Write it in your mandarin style.

Wake me up when you’ve finished”

I think I see him smile.

Farewell to the European Union

Once a lovely place (such a close embrace)

A Single Market place

Farewell to the European Union

Such a sad surprise (such a sad surprise)

Say your fond goodbyes.

Smoke and mirrors in the hallway

MEPs skating on ice

Junker says, “They are all Commissioners here,

Each with his very own slice”

And in the Ministers’ Council

They’re gathered for the feast

They stab at the Brexit Deal

But they just can’t kill the beast.

Welcome to the special Customs Union.

It’s the best-back stop but a free trade flop

Known as  Liam’s Sop.

Welcome to the special Customs Union.

Such a lovely space, keeps Good Friday in place

And it saves our face.

Last thing I remember

They’re running for the door,

They have to find the passage back to 1974.

“Relax,” said young Ollie

“I was mandated to deceive

They can check-out any time they like

But they can never leave.”
